Mr. James Osborne Dempsey, 73, of Bamberg, passed away at his residence on Saturday, September 28, 2013. A memorial service was held Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bamberg. Mr. Dempsey was born in Bamberg. He was the son of the late John and Isabel Dempsey. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, farming, carpentry, and spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Dempsey’s employment included working as an electrician for the Board of Public Works in Bamberg and serving as commissioner for the Board of Public Works for 18 years. He became a licensed contractor of Bamberg County and later established Floral Supplies in 1979. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he served as a missionary and made several trips to Haiti and Ecuador.

Mr. Hewetson A. “Sandy” Free, 72, of Cordova, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 28, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family and friends. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at Gospel Light Baptist Church in Orangeburg. Mr. Free was born August 21, 1941, in Norway, a son of the late Harry Free and the late Olivette Phin Free. He was a devoted member of Gospel Light Baptist Church and enjoyed serving the Lord by witnessing to everyone he came in contact with. He was a graduate of Norway High School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at the University of South Carolina and owned and operated Sandy Free Realty in Orangeburg for 35 years. He was an avid South Carolina Gamecock fan and was always happy to see them play.

Mrs. Mary E. Gadson, 82, of Branchville, died Friday, September 27, 2013, at the Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be available at a later date.

Mrs. Jane Headley Geiger, 74, of Bamberg died on September 26, 2013, at her residence. A private memorial service will be held. Mrs. Geiger was born in Columbia, the daughter of the late Fred and Vermelle Rush. She enjoyed art, teaching youth and spending time with her family.

Funeral services for Carole Preetorius Kirkland, 59, of Columbia, were held Friday, September 27, 2013 at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Bamberg Memory Gardens. Ms. Kirkland passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013. Born in Bamberg, she was a daughter of the late Norman Kirkland and Eloise Preetorius Kirkland. She was a lifelong area resident and a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. She was active in the Children’s Bible School and a member of the Hope Sunday School Class. Carole was a longtime employee of C.S.C. Computer Sciences Corporation, (formerly PMSC) with over 25 years of service. She was a graduate of Jefferson Davis Academy in Blackville and earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Georgia Southern University. Carole was an artist, gardener and a very creative individual. Carole was totally devoted to her daughter, Georgia, who was the love of her life. She had a big heart for all in need whether two legged or four legged.
