It was announced Thursday, September 12th, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company, Inc., would be selling the Bamberg Piggly Wiggly to BI-LO Holdings, LLC, along with 22 other locations. Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company will also be selling six other stores, plus one under construction, throughout South Carolina to Harris Teeter.

Piggly Wiggly was first founded in 1947 in Charleston, and currently has more than 3,000 employee-owners across South Carolina and coastal Georgia. However, that number will greatly decrease after the transaction of the store from Piggly Wiggly to BI-LO is completed, which is expected to happen, "in the fourth quarter of 2013 and is subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions." It is understood that once BI-LO has purchased the 22 locations of Piggly Wiggly, "the acquired stores will be rebranded under the BI-LO banner name."

A new store might mean the loss of jobs, however according to a fact sheet provided by Christopher Ibsen, Director of Corporate Affairs at Piggly Wiggly, "All Piggly wiggly employees at affected stores will have job opportunities with Harris Teeter and BI-LO."

David Schools, president and CEO of Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company said, "We are glad that all store employees affected by this transaction will have the opportunity to work for Harris Teeter and BI-LO, and guests will continue to be served by the familiar people who have been the backbone of these stores for years." Randall Onstead, president and CEO of BI-LO Holdings said, "We look forward to welcoming these new associates to the BI-LO Holdings family and to building on the strength of these stores."

"The departure of employees and stores from the Piggly Wiggly team will be acutely felt, but we know that both Harris Teeter and BI-LO will benefit from these outstanding folks," said Schools.

"We will continue to fine-tune our company and network of stores so that we can reinvest in what matters most for our customers," shared Onstead.

Other South Carolina stores being purchased by BILO include: 50 Burnt Church Road, Bluffton; 445 Meeting Street, Charleston; 630 Skylark Drive, Charleston; 136 South Main Street, Clover; 4711- 1Forest Drive, Columbia; 104 Jungle Road, Edisto Beach; 3353 Highway 72/221 East, Greenwood; 3575 Maybank Highway, Johns Island; 9616 Highway 78, Ladson; 760 Highway 378, Lexington; 4360 Augusta Road, Lexington; 208 East McIntyre Street, Mullins; 115 Willbrook Boulevard, Pawleys Island; 518 North Wheeler Avenue, Prosperity and 615 Harry C.
