Your beer is on me...

The federal government pays 100 percent of SNAP/Food Stamp program benefits (EBT card), but the money to pay social security will be gone by the time I retire. There is money to pay for EBT cards, but not for when I'm ready to quit working. That's the life, huh?

Of course the money for EBT cards comes from tax payers, and EBT users might see a change once November 2013 rolls around and the SNAP benefits are cut for all participants. However, I'm more concerned about those who receive EBT benefits, but lie in order to receive the assistance.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) website, "Over 99 percent of those receiving SNAP benefits are eligible." Can you believe that? It's almost a perfectly run government system! Wow! It is also stated on this website during the fiscal year of 2012, "Over 100 FNS analysts and investigators around the country reviewed over 15,000 stores and conducted nearly 4,500 undercover investigations." I suppose this is where the 100 analysts determined the EBT card program was almost perfect. It is my opinion these analysts haven't done an investigation in Bamberg County.

I see nothing wrong with receiving government assistance. In fact, if you qualify for it, then take it! But I do see something wrong with a person putting beer, steak, shrimp--a feast, in the back of their brand new car, while talking on the latest smart phone- -especially when they used an EBT card for the food.

Every taxpaying American citizen is paying for this feast, while the EBT participant uses their own money for the extravagant items in their possession.

It bothers me, and many people I have spoken with, to know how hard we work for our income and then to see individuals abuse this system. Tax money from our paychecks is used to fuel this type of behavior. I remember so many times seeing this when I was a cashier. It took every part of me to not say, "Your beer is on me. Enjoy!" But if I had said that, I would have lost my job, and been one less person contributing to this almost perfect system.

SNAP fraud is a serious problem in this area, and all it takes is sitting in the parking lot of the local grocery store to see it happen every day. I have seen people sell their EBT card in the parking lot of the store, and then come inside to buy beer or cigarettes. I've even heard of people using the cash to buy drugs or other forms of recreational entertainment.

I did find out if a person or retailer (grocery store) is found abusing the food stamp system, they will be removed from the system. This means they will no longer be allowed to receive the benefits, or offer the use of the EBT card at the business. I'm still laughing that 100 analysts have proven 99% of people who receive the benefits haven't lied to get them in the first place. It's an almost perfect joke.
