Mrs. Mary Norris Carter, 91, of Ehrhardt entered into rest peacefully at her son's home in Moncks Corner with her family near her Friday evening, April 12, 2013. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, April 17, 2013 at the Ehrhardt Baptist Church, Ehrhardt. Mary was born September 10, 1921 in Hartwell, Georgia to Guy Hammond Norris and Esther Ophelia Clinkscales Norris. She attended Hart County and Madison County public schools and also Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Early in her life, she worked in the dietary department of the tuberculosis sanatorium at De la Howe, South Carolina. After World War II, she moved to Walterboro, South Carolina to be near her brother, Baxter, and his wife, Myrtle. She worked as a waitress at the Lafayette Grill where she met the love of her life, Jacob H. A. Carter Jr., her husband of forty years. She was a member of the Ehrhardt Baptist Church and a life member of the Daughters of American Revolution. She loved her large family and dedicated her life to them.

Lonvesta “Lon” Colson, 80, of St. George, husband of Betty Hill Colson, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at MUSC Medical Center, Charleston. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Grover United Methodist Church. Lon was born on May 10, 1932, in Orangeburg, a son of the late Kirby Blease and Lowdrean Craven Colson. He was a graduate of St. George High School, a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Navy, the owner of Colson’s Garage and Wrecker Service and a member of Grover United Methodist Church.

Clara S. Darnell, 80, of Denmark, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Services were held Friday, April 12, 2013 at Ghents Branch Baptist Church. Ms. Darnell was born in Bamberg County to the late Harry Lee and Daisey Morrow Smoak. She was a member of Ghents Branch Baptist Church and a member of the New Hope Sunday School Class. She was a manager of Allied Department Store for many years. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by many.

Mrs. Mary Ellis Hall, 64, of Orangeburg passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Mrs. Hall was born in Kershaw County, daughter of the late Mr. Heyward Watts and Mrs. Jacqueline W. Watts. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Mrs. Hall enjoyed sewing, drawing, coloring and loved spending time with her family.

Funeral services for Deacon John Wesley Hicks, 67, of Denmark, were held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, in the Eden Baptist Church, Bamberg. Deacon Hicks died Thursday, April 11, 2013 at the Barnwell County Hospital. He was born June 15, 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Johnny and Annette Hicks. He was reared in the home of his grandparents, Coy and Ida Mae Copeland in Blackville. John Wesley was educated in the Barnwell County Public Schools System and was a graduate of the Class of ‘68, Macedonia High School, Blackville. At an early age he joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lees. After marrying the love of his life he joined the Eden Baptist Church. Here he served as a deacon and in many other capacities.

Funeral services for Mr. William “Sweetheart” Shuler Jr., 61, of Orangeburg, were held at noon Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Bamberg, with Pastor Donell B. Williams officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
