Rosa - Unfair to Citizens of Denmark

Denmark resident Johnnie Ruth Rosa addressed Council members at the April 16th meeting by stating that there were “many things left under the DHEC sanitation survey not done. She called the alleged incident after this year’s Dogwood Festival “a very ugly situation” that needed to be looked into and disclose to the public what happened. Rosa said what concerned her the most about the unsatisfactory water report was the flushing of the waterlines; “How it is being conducted and where, in asking for an appointment to see the records.” Rosa said it was unfair to citizens to have to pay fines for things not being done in the city.

Also during the meeting:

• Denmark Mayor Gerald Wright recognized the 2011-12, Denmark-Olar Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team on their outstanding season by presenting each member of the team and Head Coach Ashley Patterson with certificates of commendation. The D-O Varsity Girls’ team finished the season with a record of 18-4 and Upper State Finals Runner- Up.

• City Finance Director Rusty Munoz reported that for the nine month period through March 31, the city’s revenues and expenditures were “right in-line.” Munoz noted that the city’s water fund account is showing a net increase in revenues in access of expenditures and noted that depreciations were not reflected in the report.

• It was reported in the fire department report that the department made 14 fire calls in March in the city and county. The fire department is averaging 13 members per meeting, six members per call, with a total of 21 members.

• In the police department report it was reported the department made 76 case files in the period from March 19, 2012 through April 16, 2012.

• In the public works department report Administrator Robinson gave an update on the water and sewer departments noting that both departments were continuing to “make progress.” He noted that some flushing was done and six leaks repaired in the month of March. It was also noted that an advertisements for a fulltime operator position has been made.

• Administrator Robinson reported the city received a bid from Southeastern Underground Tank Repairs for $24,350 for cleaning two tanks. It was noted the tanks would not have to be taken off-line.

• Council members approved a adopted a resolution designating the month of April 2012 as Fair Housing Month in the city of Denmark.

In the public comments portion of the meeting:

Denmark resident Vic Whetstone spoke of the need to have guidelines for public comments spelled out. “They need to be spelled out,” Whetstone said adding “I would like to see that spelled out a little more.”
