Joan Elise Braack, 68, of Bamberg, died Monday morning, August 29, 2011, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 1, 2011 in Orangeburg. Ms. Braack was born in Rock Ville Centre, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harry H. J. Braack and Kathe T. Braack. She was a retired registered nurse in same-day surgery from the Regional Medical Center. Ms. Braack was a 1963 graduate of Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing, and in 1980 received her bachelor's at the University of South Carolina; she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude. Ms. Braack attended Emory University School of Wound Ostomy and Continence Care (WOCNEC) Nursing. She was certified in medical surgical nursing by the ANA.

Eartha Bell Graves Callen, 78, of Woodbridge, Va., formerly of Denmark, died Friday, August 19, 2011, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va. Memorial services were held Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Rome Baptist Church in Denmark. Born April 27, 1933, in Denmark to the late Booker T. and Genevieve Graves, she was educated in the public schools of Bamberg County and went on to further her education at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. Eartha was employed for more than 20 years at South Carolina State College.

Mrs. Ida Ruth Graham of Denmark died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at her residence. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Honey Ford Baptist Church in Denmark. Mrs. Graham was the daughter of the late Ms. Viola Nimmons. She was born in Denmark, where she attended Voorhees schools.

Lucille ‘Bo’ Higginbothan Kirkland, 90, of Bamberg, died Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at UniHealth Post-Acute Care of North Augusta. The funeral was held Saturday, September 3, 2011. She was the widow of Ruben Earl ‘Buck’ Kirkland. She was born January 12, 1920, in Jacksonville, Fla., to the late Roy Thomas Kirkland and the late Virginia Florene Jennings.

Maxwell Earle Rizer, 86, of Denmark, died September 4, 2011, at his home. Services were held at 3 Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Bethel Park United Methodist Church, Denmark. He was born March 9, 1925, in Olar, and was the son of the late Maxwell Earle and Baine Freeman Rizer of Olar. He was educated in the Olar public schools and graduated from Carlisle Military Academy in Bamberg. He attended Wofford College and The Citadel after World War II. As a freshman at Wofford, he was a member of the varsity football team. During World War II, he served with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater.

Lucinda Williams, 96, of New York, formerly of Bamberg, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, in New York. Graveside services were held Thursday, September 1, 2011, at Bamberg Memory Gardens. Born August 11, 1915, to the late Charlie and Annie Green Cann in Bamberg, she was educated in the public schools of Bamberg County. Lucinda was married to the late Charles Williams. In the 1940s, she, along with her family, relocated to New York. There she resided until her husband retired from the New York Housing Authority. They relocated to Aiken, where she attended Cumberland AME Church. At the age of 90, Lucinda returned to New York to live with her daughters.
