Mrs. Faye Venida Bunton Godley, 77, of Islandton, wife of the late Norris Ceal Godley, died Wednesday afternoon April 29, 2011, at Trident Medical Center in Charleston. Mrs. Godley was born in Bamberg on March 12, 1934, a daughter of the late Charles Elwood Bunton and Janie Rae Strickland Bunton. She was a graduate of Lodge High School and was a retired lunchroom worker at Bells Elementary School. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 30, 2011, in the Rice Patch Christian Church.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Black Hutto Jr., 63, of Bamberg, died Monday, April 25, 2011, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 28, 2011. He was born July 27, 1947, in Bamberg to the late Robert ‘Bob’ Hutto Sr. and the late Margaret Ellen Pender. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years, was a lineman for Edisto Electric Cooperative, and he enjoyed farming as well as hunting and fishing.

Mary Ann Proveaux, 80, of Orangeburg died Sunday evening, April 30, 2011, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 3. Mrs. Proveaux was born June 29, 1930, in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Arthur Blocker and the late Annie Mae Griffin Padgett.

Funeral services for Nerlin Smith Jr. ‘Spade’, 78, of Denmark, were held Saturday, April 30, 2011, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lee. Nerlin was born to the late Nerlin and Inez Smith Sr. on July 18, 1932, in Bamberg. At an early age he joined Spring Field UMC and later joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he attended until his health failed. He attended Jericho High School in Denmark. He was employed by the City of Denmark and later retired.

Funeral services for James Robert ‘Darling’ Spires, 84, of Gilbert, formerly of Bamberg, were held Friday, April 29, 2011. Mr. Spires, husband of Hattie Spires, died Tuesday, April 26. Born in Bamberg, he was a son of the late Elvin Eugene Spires and Jo Mae Carroll Spires. He was a member of St. Matthews Church of God. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a DAV from World War II, Chapter 33. Mr. Spires was a retired truck driver.

The funeral for Ms. Tonya Barnwell Thomas, 40, of Bamberg, was held Saturday, April 30, 2011, in the Denmark Technical College Gym. She was born June 25, 1970, to Ellanora J. Barnwell and the late James H. Barnwell Sr. in Bamberg. At an early age she joined the Orange Grove United Methodist Church where she was very active and served in many capacities. She was Lay Leader, President of the Young Adult Choir, Youth Director, Worship Chair, and a member of Evangelism and the Choir. Tonya was a 1988 graduate of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. She continued her education and graduated with an Associate Degree in Business and Computer Science from Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, B.S. in Computer Science from Voorhees College, M.S. in Computer Information Systems from the University of Phoenix and an M.S. in Organization and Management from Cappella University.
