A Denmark man is in
critical condition at the Doctor’s
Hospital Burn Unit in Augusta
Georgia after receiving third
degree burns over 50 percent of
his body.
Wayne Gibson of Denmark
was severely burned, when fire
officials in Summerville say a
propane tank delivered to the
Raisio Staest Plant on Deming
Way in Summerville burst into
flames.
The Old Fort Fire
Department responded to the fire Saturday evening around 7 pm.
Fire officials say a propane
delivery to the plant went wrong
when one of the tanks flashed
and burst into flames burning
the deliveryman, (Wayne
Gibson) from Denmark.
Officials say Gibson
suffered third degree burns to
over 50 percent of his body.
Gibson was airlifted to Trident
Hospital after the accident and
is presently listed in critical
condition at Doctor’s Hospital
Burn Unit, in Augusta.
Gibson is a longtime
volunteer with the Denmark
Fire Department and at the
December 21, 2009 City
Council meeting, Denmark
Mayor Gerald Wright
recommended that Gibson be
named assistant fire chief and
Charles Breland be named
Denmark fire chief. The mayor
praised the work of both men in
the fire department.
“Charles Breland and
Wayne Gibson have been acting
as co-chiefs in an interim basis
since Johnny Sandifer
resigned,” Mayor Wright said.
“They willingly accepted that
responsibility to work together
quite well. And, we want to now
make it official to designate
them with those titles. They’ve
established a procedure for the
offices of chief and assistant
chief, that is the
recommendation for action,”
Wright added.
Presently, discussions are
centered on sponsoring a blood
drive at the Denmark Fire
Department and a fundraiser
through a local bank. For more
information on these events
contact the Denmark Fire
Department or Chief Charles
Breland at 803-793-4900.
Officials note that “Wayne
needs lots of prayers to recover
from this accident.” |
