Job Corps…30 years Print E-mail

The Bamberg Job Corps Center held its “30th Anniversary; Building Lives and Launching Careers” on Friday morning October 3 in the center’s gymnasium. The center which is the only one located in South Carolina reflected on its service to the community.

Douglas Stokes, representing the community said, “The Bamberg Job Corps Center is a well kept secret and a great recruiting base. When I need help in the community you open your hearts. We welcome you here for 30 more years.”

One of the highlights of the program was the recognition of several former center directors and other employees that have been with the school over the years including; Jerry Durgan, Bo Griffin, Roger Moses, and Lucious Crosby.

Jerry Durgan, a former center director, started his career with the first Job Corps Center at the old Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, Texas. He also worked with a Women’s Job Corps Program in McKinney Texas. In June of 1975 he began working at the new Job Corps Center in Bamberg. Durgan recalled that when he first saw the old Carlisle Military School, site of the present center, “it was knee deep in weeds and it looked like an Atomic Bomb had hit it.”

Durgan was named Center Director in 1982 and served until 1985 when TMR lost its contract to another company. He then stayed on as Director of Education. After retiring from Job Corps and working in Orangeburg School District Two for a few years, he began writing for the Advertizer-Herald Newspaper. He is currently a substitute teacher for Job Corps when needed.

Durgan stated that; “after more than forty years being involved in some aspect of Job Corps I remain as devoted to the program as I was the first day I stepped on the grounds of the Gary Job Corps Center.”

Bo Griffin a previous center director said Jerry Durgan was one of the first people he met when he came to Job Corps. Griffin thanked the center for recognizing him. “I love this place, Job Corps thank you for making the community and state proud.”

Lucious Crosby thanked the center for recognizing him and he noted how things have changed since the time he was there. Peggy Lingard recognized other members of the staff for their years of service at the conclusion of the program.
