Old Friends

When the month of July comes around, people in this area look forward to seeing old friends from far and wide at the Annual Old Friends Invitational Golf Classic at PawPaw Country Club in Bamberg. This year marks the tournament’s 27th year, July 11th-18th, and it has become an annual tradition and hopefully one that will continue for many more years to come.

By tradition the Winn Clary Memorial Golf Tournament kicks off Old Friends week on Saturday, July 11. The tournament started by Winn’s childhood friend Jim Kemp and Nelson Perry raises funds to cover the non-medical expenses of families with sick children each year. Kemp is proud to say that the tournament has never been rained out and he is hoping for fair skies again this year.

In the relative cool of the evening on July 4, 2009 spectators and patrons by the hundreds came to the Julius B. Ness Sports Complex in Bamberg for the City’s 13th Annual 4th of July Celebration. Sitting in lawn chairs they listened to golden oldies performed by the legendary Otis Brown formerly of the Drifters and Bamberg’s own David Cooler.

The highlight of the evening’s entertainment was a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by Phoenix Specialty and Tobul Accumulator co-sponsors of this year’s City of Bamberg Fourth of July Celebration.

‘Tug of War’

“To the victors go the spoils.” Such was the case when Home Federal Savings & Loan of Bamberg, sponsor of the epic tug of war battle between local industries Tobul Accumulator and Delavan at Bamberg’s Fourth of July Celebration, honored the triumphant Tobul Accumulator team on their hard earned victory.

Tobul Accumulator CEO Jim Tobul, expressed his appreciation to Home Federal Savings and Loan and CEO Bo Griffin and Phoenix Specialty and CEO Robert Hurst for their parts in making the City of Bamberg Fourth of July Celebration a success.
