The City of Denmark held an
Installation Ceremony for Mayor
and City Council members on
April 15, 2009 on the campus of
Denmark Technical College, in
Denmark SC.
Councilmember Attorney
Evert Comer, Jr. presided over the
program. The posting of the
Colors was conducted by the
Denmark-Olar High School Jr.
ROTC. Rev. Dr. Ira Johnson,
Chaplain Voorhees College and
Vicar St. Phillip’s Church gave the
invocation.
Instrumental Music was provided
by Mr. Edward R. Generett
of Denmark.
Greetings were provided by
Dr. James Waddell, President of
Denmark Technical College, and
former Mayor of Denmark, Carrie
S. Simmons. “The city will be in
good hands with Gerald E. Wright.
Attorney Evert Comer Jr.
administered the oath of office to
Mayor Dr. Gerald E. Wright and
Councilmember Jake N. Bookard
Sr. “This office isn’t by chance,
but by choice, we do everything to
improve the city of Denmark. A
chain is only as strong as its weakest
link, you’re all a link in that
chain, we need all of you to move
the city forward,” Bookard said.
District 90 Representative
Bakari T. Sellers administered the
oath of office to council members
Bonnie Love, and James
Robinson. “We want to thank our
citizens, we ask for your prayers,
we want to be there for you, and
you be there for us. If it weren’t for
God, we wouldn’t be here, we will
make a better road for Denmark,”
Love said. Councilmember James
Robinson stated, “I thank the citizens
of Denmark who voted for
me, I had an opportunity my first
term to work with the little people,
we’re going to get the youth
involved in the community, I
promise I will do a better job this
time,” Robinson said.
Mayor Gerald E. Wright in
his acceptance address spoke in a
somber tone of the road ahead.
“We’re going through some difficult
and challenging times, we’re
going to need your help,” Wright
said. “I accept the challenge before
me with a degree of apprehension
and trepidation, our best chance to
survive in these challenging times
is to work together with a cooperative
spirit,” Wright said. “There
are basic services we must provide;
we have a unique set of
resources in Denmark. I would
challenge anyone to find a town of
this size with the resources we
have. We are probably the smallest
town in South Carolina with two
colleges, we have resources that
probably can’t be measured in economic
terms, with God’s help and
your cooperation, we will have the
model town in the town of
Denmark,” Wright said. |
