At Monday night’s meeting
BPW Manager Bruce Ellis told
City Council, “that the Board of
Public Works’ electrical rates are
right now the lowest rates in the
state.
“Since 1981,” he said, “I’ve
been keeping track of our rates. We
have always had the lowest electrical
rates in the county among the
local suppliers – SCE&G, Edisto
Electrical Coop, and the Bamberg
Board of Public Works. During that
time,” he explained, “we have
sometimes been the lowest in the
state … if not the lowest, we’ve
been in the lowest two or three percent
of the state. That’s something
that you (the Board) can be proud
of.”

The Board of Public Works is
one of only 21 municipal power
systems in the state of South
Carolina. The Board of Public
Works is one of only 2 municipal
systems that purchases electricity
from the SC Public Service
Authority (Santee Cooper).
Electricity from Santee Cooper is
distributed through the Board of
Public Works Substation that is
located at the corner of Elm Street
and Calhoun Street.
