Relay For Life
Dear Editor,
One of Bamberg County’s
most celebrated and popular
events is, Relay For Life, a
yearly celebration that raises
funds and public awareness in
the fight against cancer. We are
making plans now for the 2009
festivities and are excited to be
celebrating twenty five years of
Relay For Life this year. Over
the years, volunteers have
served countless hours in making
Bamberg County’s event
one of the most successful and
celebrated in our state. We
would love to have previous
volunteers and participants to
come back on board this year
and help us celebrate all the
progress we have made the past
twenty five years. Our event is
scheduled for May 1 through
May 2, 2009 and we want each
of you to have the opportunity
to participate and help us fight
this disease that has affected us
all individually and as a community.
Relay For Life is a truly
unique fund-raising event. A
community party atmosphere
takes place whereby team
members camp out on the site
and enjoy live entertainment,
food, games, and camaraderie.
Highlights include the
Survivors’ Walk and the
Luminary Ceremony. This year,
we are adding a third element:
Fight Back, which asks each of
us to take a personal stand to
get involved and take action in
the battle of this disease.
Cancer touches everyone in
some way. One out of two
patients diagnosed with cancer
will survive. Your contributions
make that difference. Last year,
the American Cancer Society
contributed more than
$1,000,000 toward research at
both the University of South
Carolina and the Medical
University of South Carolina.
The American Cancer Society
also provided funding for cancer
screenings, support groups,
and $36,000 in college scholarships
to South Carolina survivors
of childhood cancer. All
of these would not be possible
without the funds raised from
Relay For Life and Bamberg
County significantly helps with
these opportunities.
We look forward to creating
an amazing event for
Bamberg and appreciate you
giving us the ability to do so in
your community. If you are
willing to help by having a
team, being on the planning
committee or if you have any
questions or concerns regarding
the event, please feel free to
contact me. Thank you and we
look forward to hearing from
you.
Sincerely and many thanks,
Valerie Montgomery Bridges
