Two students enrolled in
Denmark public schools were
arrested for allegedly making four
separate bomb threats against the
school district office, Denmark-Olar High and Denmark-Olar
Middle schools.
Two bomb threats were made
to Denmark-Olar Middle School at
12:45 p.m. Thursday, May 22, and
again to the Bamberg School
District 2 Office at 12:10 p.m.,
Friday, May 23.
The third bomb threat was
called in to Denmark-Olar High
and Denmark-Olar Middle on
Tuesday at around 9 a.m., the
Denmark Police Chief Leroy
Grimes said.
Wednesday’s bomb threat was
called in to Denmark-Olar Middle
at 11 a.m., he said, and law enforcement
officers were ready for it, taking
the juveniles into custody shortly
after the two youths allegedly
made the call.
Students were not dismissed
for any of the bomb threats, but
were evacuated each time, “From past experience, Grimes said, “we
learned several important things.
For example, we learned not to
evacuate to areas that would draw
curiosity seekers. We evacuated
students to the rear of the high
school rather than to the front,
where on-lookers were less likely
to be drawn.”
The SLED bomb squad came
in each time and searched the
schools to ensure everyone’s safety
before classes resumed after about
an hour.
The Denmark Police
Department, the Denmark Fire
Department, the Bamberg County
Sheriff’s Department and the
SLED bomb squad responded each
time. Agents with the State Law
Enforcement Team spent three days
in Denmark assisting Denmark
police in investigating the bomb
threats, Grimes said.
One of the students is facing
four counts each of making bomb
threats and disrupting schools, and
the other student is charged with
three counts each of making bomb
threats and disrupting schools, the
police chief said. |
