With House District 90 Representative Bakari Sellers of Denmark having announced his intention to run for the Lieutenant Governor’s position in 2014, another Bamberg County native is announcing his intention to run for Sellers’ seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Ehrhardt, native Dr. Monnie Singleton, President and CEO of Singleton Health Center in Orangeburg and the Medical Center of Santee said his reasons for running for the District 90 Seat are his concerns for the district, healthcare, economic development (jobs’ preservation and creation), and education.

“All three are necessary, not only for District 90, but also for the entire state of South Carolina,” Singleton said. He noted healthcare is closely linked to economic development and education. “Employers are looking for a healthy, educated workforce. People who have jobs are generally wealthier, healthier, and more educated. Education provides for better employment opportunities, and improves individuals’ chances of accessing healthcare services,” Singleton added.

Singleton stated South Carolina is poor and unhealthy compared to other states. And District 90 is among the poorest and unhealthiest districts in the state. “We must advocate for improved access to healthcare services. I am a strong supporter of ensuring access to healthcare services.”

Dr. Singleton, who is a 1974 graduate of Bamberg- Ehrhardt High School, a 1978 graduate of South Carolina State University, a 1983 graduate of the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, said he would encourage and support education.

“Employers searching for new locations to establish businesses also look for an educated workforce and for good schools for their children to attend. If we do not invest in education, we miss opportunities to attract businesses.”

Dr. Singleton noted another reason he is running for office is to foster more unity in District 90. “We must put aside our differences and come together as a united District 90. In times past, we have lost so many opportunities because of bickering and divisiveness.”

Dr. Monnie Singleton is the son of the late Monnie Singleton and Evelyn Singleton of Ehrhardt. He has been married to Erma Bunyan Singleton for twenty-six years, and they are the parents of Omar. Dr. Singleton and his family reside in Bamberg and are members of Union Baptist Church.
