Mrs. Alafair Akin, 74, of Bamberg, died Saturday, October 26, 2013, at The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg. Arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Funeral services for Paul “Pop” Blake, 87, of Bamberg, were held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Born on April 19, 1926, in Olar to the late Isaiah and Sarah Blake, he was one of nine children. At an early age, he joined Bethlehem Olar Baptist Church, Olar. After his marriage to Lovely Ann Rickenbacker on February 26, 1948, he joined Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Midway. While at Mount Zion, he served in various capacities: member of the Senior Choir, the Men’s Choir, the United Methodist Men, the Older Adult Ministry and chairperson of the trustee board. “Pop,” as he was known to his grandchildren, was a member of Bamberg Lodge #40 for more than 40 years; there he reached the level of Senior Deacon and Third-Degree Master Mason. He retired after working for Bamberg County three times, from 1988 to 2003. One of Paul’s favorite quotes was, “He did not have a college degree, but he had a knowledge degree from life experiences.”

Johnathan Jamal “White Boy” Busby, 17, of Bamberg died Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 28, 2013 in the Greater Sweet Branch Baptist Church, Govan. Johnathan was born December 23, 1995, in Orangeburg to Robert and Barbara Dowling Busby. He was a senior at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. His earlier education was obtained in the Denmark school system. At an early age, he joined the St. Phillips A. F. Church in Olar. White Boy, as he was known by his many friends, was employed at the Bamberg Pizza Hut. He was a member of the JROTC.

Mrs. Maida O’Brien Creech, 80, of Norway, died Sunday, October 20, 2013, at The Oaks in Orangeburg. The funeral was held Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Norway Baptist Church in Norway. Mrs. Creech was born June 18, 1933, in Norway, a daughter of the late Harvey L. O’Brien and the late Judie Boltin O’Brien Webb. She was a member of Norway Baptist Church, where she had served in various offices and committees.

Mr. Lee Alto “LT” Hughes, 89, passed away in Columbia on October 28, 2013. He was born in 1924 the son of the late Mr. Johnny and Margaret Hughes of Norway. Services were held Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at the Branchville Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Manning officiating. Burial followed at the Ott Cemetery in Branchville, S.C.

Mrs. Mildred Zeigler Priester, 103, of Bamberg passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at her residence. She was born on March 25, 1910, in Bamberg, the daughter of the late Elijah and Annie Lee Zeigler Funeral services were held October 25, 2013, at Hunters Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Mew and Rev. Donnie Delk officiating. Burial followed in the Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Mildred M. Steedly, 85 years of age, died Saturday, October 26, 2013. Mrs. Steedly was born in Reevesville, a daughter of the late Alonzo Hutto and Rachel Corrine McAlhany Hutto; she was the widow of the late J. W. Steedly. Mrs. Steedly was a member of the Branchville Baptist Church, loved working with her flowers, and spending time with her family. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at Branchville Baptist Church.
