Funeral services for Christopher Banks, 56, of Denmark, were held on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at Rome Baptist Church, Denmark. Mr. Banks died on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Dorn VA Medical Center, Columbia. Born on November 17, 1956, to Elijah Odom and the late Daisy Banks Smalls in Bamberg County, he was raised in the home of his grandparents, Albert Sr. and Margaret Banks, along with his cousin who was raised as a sister, Shirley A. Banks. He was a graduate of Denmark-Olar High School where he was a phenomenal basketball player. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, retiring with honors. He joined Rome Baptist Church and served until his passing.

Minnie Jewel Weeks Bryant, 89, of Bamberg, entered into eternal rest Monday, September 16, 2013, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. She was born in Whiteville, N.C., to the late Mr. George Weeks and Mrs. Nellie Jane Bullard Weeks. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

Mr. Robert Fine, 76, of Orangeburg, died Sunday, September 15, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Martha Ann Brunson Harper, 87, widow of Keith McQueen Harper, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, September 12, 2013, at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Mrs. Harper was born in Denmark on January 27, 1926, a daughter of the late Joseph Eugene Brunson and Swannanoa Hughes Brunson. She grew up in Denmark and graduated from Denmark public schools. After graduating from Winthrop College, Mrs. Harper taught elementary education in Georgetown and Andrews for 37 years. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 6444, and a communicant of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church, where she was active in the Altar Guild and Women of the Church.

Peggy Haynes, 80, of Bamberg, died Monday, September 16, 2013, at her residence. Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Frances Carroll Metts, 84 years of age, widow of Archie M. Metts, entered into eternal rest on Monday, September 16, 2013. Frances was born in Conway, a daughter of the late William E. and Mary Carroll. She was a former resident of Charleston, where she was a longtime employee of W. T. Grant Co. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, September18, 2013 at Metts Cemetery in Branchville.

Mary Carolyn Jackson Price, 70, of Bamberg, wife of the Rev. Johnny Lewis Price Jr., passed away on Friday, September 13, 2013, at her home. Graveside services were held on Monday, September 16, 2013 at Westview Memorial Park, Laurens. A celebration service will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at First Church of the Nazarene of Bamberg with visitation following the service. Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late William Wesley and Ada Ophelia Benjamin Jackson, was formerly employed with Orangeburg Christian Academy and was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Bamberg.

The funeral for Jerline Simpson Sanders, 61, of Dumfries, Va., was held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at St. James Baptist Church, Branchville. Jerline “Jeri” Simpson Sanders, 61, departed this life on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va. Jeri was born on March 4, 1952, in Orangeburg to Lillie Mae Simpson Johnson and the late Blease Simpson. Her stepfather was the late Laurea Johnson of Orangeburg. She was preceded in death by her brother, Colell Blease Simpson. Jeri married Maj. Samuel E. Sanders, USMC, in 1983 in Kansas City, Mo. They traveled the world together until Sam’s retirement. They celebrated more than 29 years of marriage.

James Edward Shuler, 92, of the Providence Community, widower of Lena “Lee” Bianco Shuler, died on Friday, September 13, 2013, at the home of his daughter in Holly Hill. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 16, 2013 at Providence United Methodist Church. Mr. Shuler was born in Parler, a son of the late James Allen Shuler and Lena Traxler Shuler. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he worked at the Providence Farmer’s Supply for more than 40 years and worked at Orangeburg County collection site for 13 years. Mr. Shuler was a lifelong active member of Providence UMC.
