Red Raiders over Hawks

Jerry E. Halmon, Sports Editor

When asked the question at the start of the season how he would replace two 1,000 yard rushers from last year’s team in Demetrius Odom and Devontrae Williams, B-E head football coach Butch Crosby didn’t hesitate. “Rayquan Brown can carry the load,” Crosby said of his (5-9,160) scat-back. And carry the load Brown did Friday night in leading the Red Raiders (1-3) to their first victory of the season, a 28-7 non-region win over rival Blackville-Hilda at Leon Maxwell Stadium in a battle of the wishbone offenses. Brown carried the ball 34 times for 258 yards and scored three touchdowns in leading the Red Raiders to their badly needed first win of the season.

Friday night’s 28-7 win over Blackville comes on the heels a 36-27 loss to Woodland last Friday night in Byrds and marked the team’s highest point output of the season so far. When asked Sunday evening at the Red Raiders football complex his thoughts on Friday night’s game, Coach Crosby noted his team’s improvement.

“We’re getting better,” Crosby said, adding “We need to continue fighting, keep on driving; our coaches are doing a great job with our kids, we hope it will pay off for us in the end.”

In the first quarter of Friday night’s game at the 9:06 mark, Brown wasted no time making his presence known to the Hawks racing 60-yards for a BE score that was called back for holding. He would later score on a 7-yard run at 5:41 of the first making the score 6-0 B-E. Matt Maxwell’s first of four PATs made the score 7-0 B-E. At 10:02 of the second quarter Brown would score on a 5 yard run making the score 14-0 Red Raiders.

K.C. Crosby’s 75 yard punt return to the Hawks 3 yard line setup a three yard touchdown run by Marcus Moody at 7:01 of the second quarter making the score 21-0 B-E.

The Hawks would add a score before the first half ended making the score 21-7 B-E. Unofficially Rayquan Brown had 19 carries for 152 yards at halftime. Brown would score his third and final touchdown in the third quarter making the final score 28-7 B-E.

Other Regional Games

The Denmark-Olar Vikings fell to 0-4 on the season after a 55-14 loss to the Williston-Elko Blue Devils at Viking Field Friday night.

The Branchville Yellow Jackets were looking to go above the 500 mark for the first time since reviving their football program, but instead fell to 1-2 on the season after a 22-6 loss to Academic Magnet Friday night.

AJA Confederates Romp

The Andrew Jackson Academy Varsity Football team picked up their first win of the season with a 38-6 victory over region rival Jefferson Davis. AJA would strike quickly in the first quarter. After a Hayden Scharber fumble recovery, Hunter Scharber dashed 35 yards for a touchdown on AJA's first play from scrimmage. Michael Mathias tacked on the 2-point conversion and the Confederates led 8-0. JDA's Dalton Bell would score on a 14 yard run to cut the lead to 8-6. Mathias then took the ensuing kickoff at the 10 yard line and raced 90 yards for a Confederate touchdown. Christian Lee ran in the conversion to make the score 16-6. Mathias would add another touchdown from 1 yard out to push the AJA lead to 22-6 at the half.

Mathias would once again reach pay dirt in the 3rd quarter, this time on a 32 yard pass from quarterback Joseph Stanfield. Hunter Scharber’s conversion run made it 30-6 in favor of the Confederates. Hunter Scharber would tack on another score in the final quarter on a 27 yard run and Riley Ackerman’s conversion run made the final score, 38-6. Hunter Scharber led the offense with 109 yards on 10 carries and 2 scores. Mathias finished with 69 yards on 15 carries, one reception for 32 yards, and three touchdowns. Lee added 55 yards rushing and Stanfield 52 yards rushing to go along with 41 passing yards.
