Monday, August 12, Bamberg School District Two Board of Trustees passed a resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of a not exceeding $100,000 general obligation bond to finish the Denmark-Olar Elementary and Middle School gyms. According to superintendent Dr. Thelma Sojourner, the bond will help complete the heating and air conditioning, along with the completion of the floors.

In other matters of business, the attorney fees for July 2013 in the amount of $138.86 were approved for payment, after the board was made aware of the continuing contract with the STAR Center in Orangeburg District Four for the 2013-2014 school year.

Larry Bias, chairman of BSD2 Board of Trustees, congratulated the principals and school staffs for their process on the state report card for the 2012- 2013 school year. He also offered support of the board for continued improvement in the upcoming school years.

The calendar of events, classroom expectations and instruction, initial student testing and common core standards were addressed by Dr. Ruby Johnson.

In reference to previously mentioned concussion training, which was noted as legislative mandate at the July board meeting, Sojourner noted training for parents and athletic department was held on August 7th. It was also noted the School Law Conference was scheduled for August 24th-25th. Sojourner mentioned inviting Dwayne Cooper, from the South Carolina School Board Association, to provide additional legislative updates in the October or November board meeting.

Sojourner discussed a meeting, which was held with SACS accreditation representations. The representatives recommended the district, "pursue district wide accreditation, using the 2013- 2014 school year as a planning year."

In keeping up with graduates from DOHS, Sojourner told the board of Semaj Moody, who recently signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. The theme for 2013-2014 school year, follows last year's theme, "Student Achievement, Accountability, Attendance - Turning It All Around."

After executive session, the board recommended decisions for the employees and students of the district, and then moved to adjourn the meeting.
