The funeral for Mr. Johnny “Bill” Carmichael, 70, of Laurel Baye Healthcare, Orangeburg, formerly of Branchville, was held Monday, March 4, 2013, at St. Stephens Baptist Church, Branchville. Mr. Johnny Carmichael was born August 5, 1942, in Rowesville to the late Frank Carmichael Sr. and Idella Abraham Carmichael. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg after an extended illness. Bill, as he was affectionately called, was well known in the Branchville community. He loved hunting. Bill was educated in the public schools in Branchville, where he last attended Lockett High School. After school, Bill moved to New York where he worked for Arrow Beverages. He moved back to his hometown of Branchville and worked many years at Utica Tool, Cox Wood Preserving and Council Lumber. He married the former Mamie Phillips on November 30, 1968. This union was blessed with two beautiful children.

Funeral services for Mr. Bernard Cummings, 80, of NJ and formerly of Bowman, was held Thursday, February 28, 2013, at St. Stephens United Methodist Church, Bowman. Bernard Cummings was born January 12, 1933, in Washington, D.C. He was the eldest child of the late Mack and Dora Stephens Cummings. He departed this life for a place of eternal rest on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at his residence, following an extended illness. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church. Bernard received his early education at Bowman Rosenwald School. After high school, he was employed by the Savannah River Site in Aiken until he was drafted into the armed forces in 1953. After the military, he graduated with a degree in brick masonry from Denmark Area Trade School in Denmark and was employed with Howard Construction Company in Jersey City as a master bricklayer for 22 years until his retirement in 1995. He was united in holy matrimony to the former Genevieve Kelly of Bowman on May 20, 1957. This union was blessed with two daughters.

Mrs. Catherine M. Connelly, 88, of Reevesville, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Mrs. Connelly was born in Branchville, a daughter of the late Joe McAlhany and Vicky Walters McAlhany. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

Herbert Azel Keitt Sr., 82, of Bamberg, died Monday, February 25, 2013, at UniHealth Post-Acute Care in Bamberg. A memorial service was held Friday, March 1, 2013. He was born March 10, 1930, in Orangeburg, the son of the late Herbert Arthur Keitt and the late Martha Mae Antley Keitt. He served in the National Guard for three years. He was retired from Albemarle Chemical Company.

Services for Lillie Mae Odom, 60, of Ehrhardt, were held Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Union Baptist Church. She died Monday, February 25, 2013 at her residence. Lillie Mae Odom was born on February 6, 1953, in Bamberg County to the late Otto Odom Sr. and the late Mary G. Odom. At a young age, she joined Union Baptist Church, where she served honorably in many civic and religious capacities. Lillie Mae was a member of the class of 1971 of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School and went on to further her education by receiving a bachelor of science degree in business from Voorhees College, Denmark, in 1982. Lillie Mae retired from the Savannah River Site after 21 years of service as a multi-skilled technician.

Jenny Jeanette Collins Phillips, 75, of Barnwell, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at UniHealth Post-Acute Care in Bamberg. Jenny was born January 4, 1938, in Barnwell County. She was the daughter of the late Achille and Ruth Morris Collins. She retired from the receiving department at the Savannah River Site. She was a member of Hilda Southern Methodist Church. Jenny will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Hilda Southern Methodist Church.

Christopher James Sanders, 50, of Barnwell died Monday, February 25th 2013 at his home after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 28th, 2013 at Greenbranch Pentecostal Holiness Church in Barnwell. Born in Barnwell County, Mr. Sanders was the son of Coy and Gloria Ann Sanders of Barnwell. Chris was a member of Greenbranch Pentecostal Holiness Church. He loved gardening, fishing, and will be missed by many.

Vivian Smoak Stamps, 99, of Cordova, passed away Monday, February 25, 2013, at The Oaks, Orangeburg. A graveside service was held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Cordova.

Mrs. Ruth Hiers Zissett, 94, of Barnwell, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at the UniHealth Post-Acute Care, Bamberg. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. Ruth was born on August 6, 1918, in Barnwell County. She was a daughter of the late Solomon Gilmore and Eula Lee Odom Hiers. She will be remembered as an excellent cook and gardener. She was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
