Funeral services for Otis Bryant Jr., 81, of Bamberg, were held Thursday, November 29, 2012, in St. Luke United Methodist Church of Ehrhardt. Mr. Otis Bryant Jr. was born January 27, 1930, in Aiken to the late Otis Bryant Sr. and the late Mamie Raysor Bryant. Otis, who was affectionately known as “Bus,” was reared in the home of his Uncle John and Aunt Mary Ella McMillan. At an early age, Otis joined St. Luke United Methodist Church. For many years, Otis was employed with McMillan Logging Company. After moving to Columbia, Otis worked as a custodian for 21 years.

Mrs. Ethel Jordan-Calhoun, 82, formerly of Denmark, died Saturday, November 24, 2012, in Carolinas Medical Center-North East in Concord, N.C. Funeral services were held Friday, November 30, 2012 in the City of Refuge Ministries in Denmark. Ethel was born in Bamberg County to the late Johnny and Ethel Rice-Hill. At an early age, she joined Capernaum Baptist Church in Denmark. She relocated to New York City, where she joined St. Paul Baptist Church. Upon her return to her home state of South Carolina, she joined City of Refuge Ministries in Denmark. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late John Henry Jordan and this union was blessed with seven kids.

Darlene A. McCormick, 70, of Branchville died Tuesday morning, November 27, 2012, at her residence. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Funeral services for Benjamin Haynes Jr., 78, of Columbia, were held Friday, November 30, 2012, in Mount Zion United Methodist Church (Midway) in Bamberg. Benjamin Alexander Haynes Jr., was born July 1, 1934, in Charleston to the late Benjamin Alexander Haynes Sr. and Mary Eugenia Smoak-Haynes. Ben or “Benny” as he was often called was educated in the public school system in Charleston. He later joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951, served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. Ben and Alice A. Kearse were joined in holy matrimony in September 1954 in Bamberg. This union was blessed with one child, Anthony “Tony” Irvin Hayes in 1956, who preceded his father in death in March 2008. After retirement and relocating to South Carolina, Mr. Haynes joined Mount Zion United Methodist Church where he became very active, served as an usher and initiated the food service ministry. He also worked very hard as a scout master with Troop #24 in Bamberg.

Jimmy Wayne Hill Sr., 69, of Orangeburg died Sunday, December 2, 2012, at MUSC in Charleston. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Mr. Hill was born in Savannah, GA., a son of Vivian Rigdon Hill and the late James Hair. He was retired from the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. He was a member of Cornerstone Church of Orangeburg.

Gertie Lou Johnson, 48, of Bamberg, died Friday, November 30, 2012, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral arrangements will be available at a later date.

Funeral services for Eugene Murdock, 87, of Branchville, were held Saturday, December 1, 2012, in Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Midway Community, Bamberg. Born June 2, 1925, to the late Charlie McClinton and Mattie (Robinson) Murdock, he was one of 13 children. He attended the public schools in Bamberg County. On February 13, 1949, he married the former Helen Turner and to this union, eight children were born. Eugene and Helen were married for more than 60 years. At an early age, he joined Claflin United Methodist Church and served faithfully as a deacon until his health began to fail. In 1988, he retired from Edisto Electric Cooperative. Eugene was a member of Dyches Lodge #10, was a Past Worshipful Master, and then became an honorary member after reaching the age of 80. He also served as Worthy Patron for Oak Grove Chapter #19, Order of the Eastern Star in Ehrhardt.

Mary Ellen Padgett, 96, of Bamberg, died December 1, 2012, in Brian Center Nursing Care. Funeral services were held Monday, December 3, 2012, in Spring Branch Baptist Church. She was born August 24, 1916, in Bamberg to the late Jasper Brabham Padgett and the late Nora Herndon Padgett. She was a clerk for Hands Jewelry Store. She enjoyed playing piano, working in the yard, reading and spending time with her family.

Annelle Westbury Rickenbaker, 92, of Orangeburg, died Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at the home of her daughter. A memorial service was held Saturday, December 1, 2012. Mrs. Rickenbaker was born April 23, 1920, in Branchville, a daughter of the late Dove Lee Westbury and the late Carrie Eugenia (Jeannie) Thompson. She attended public school in Branchville and later graduated from Columbia High School in Columbia. She was always friendly and outgoing. All through her life, she was active in her community, active in scouting as a leader of Girl Scout Troop 45, and was a longstanding member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where she was always willing to serve where she was needed. She had a special place in her heart for the very young and the elderly. She spent her entire life taking care of others and was loved by everyone.

Esther Stuckey Rushing, 91, of Port Wentworth, Ga. died Tuesday November 27, 2012 at Westview Nursing & Rehab. She was born in Cope, and grew up in Bamberg. The funeral service was held Saturday, December 1, 2012. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, The Hibiscus Garden Club, Garden Club of Chatham County and the Savannah Bar Ladies Auxiliary. She was a Homemaker, great wife, mother, grandmother, sweet person, loving, caring and a true Southern Lady.

Sandra “Sandy” Union Fersner Turner, 65, of Bamberg, died Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at her residence. The funeral was held Saturday, December 1, 2012, in Trinity United Methodist Church in Bamberg. She was born January 22, 1947, in Orangeburg, the daughter of Mary Grace Howell Union and the late James Joseph Union Jr. She graduated from Orangeburg High School and Orangeburg School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She was a former member of the Junior Service League. She was formerly employed by Wade Hampton Academy as a teacher’s aide, the Regional Medical Center, Savannah River Site and Bamberg Police Department. Sandy taught swimming lessons in Orangeburg for more than 20 years. She attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Bamberg.
