Annette Dokes, 82, of Bamberg, died
Monday, August 30, 2012, at the
Hospice Care Center in Aiken.
Services were held Saturday, September 1, 2012, in
Hickory Hill United Methodist
Church. Annette was born
December 27, 1929, in
Bamberg, to the late Ellen
Dokes Toomer. She was
educated in the public schools of
Ehrhardt. She later relocated to
New York City, staying there for
a number of years until coming
back to live in her home state of
South Carolina. She was a
lifelong member of Hickory Hill
United Methodist in Smoaks.
Here she served in many
capacities: chairperson of PPRC,
president of the kitchen
committee, trustee and
nomination committee member,
a United Methodist Women
member and captain of the Fall
Season of the annual October
Tea.
Funeral services for John
Lawton “J. L.” Gleaton, 88, of
Blackville were held Sunday, September 2, 2012. J. L. was born in Orangeburg
County, he was a son of the late
Jessie James Gleaton and Lily
Mae Chavis Gleaton and was
married for 64 years to the late
Delores Williams Gleaton. He
was known as Catfish John and
in 1993 received Father of the
Year Award in Barnwell County,
loved to fish, was a farmer and
was of the Pentecostal Faith.
The funeral service for Mrs.
Lovely Mae Grimes, 78, of
Monroe, NC, and formerly of
Bamberg, was held Monday, September 3, 2012, at
Mount Carmel United Methodist
Church in Bamberg. Lovely Mae Grimes, the daughter of the late Ellen
Johnson Williams and Samuel
Williams was born in Bamberg,
completed her education at the
former Richard Carroll High
School and furthered her
education at Voorhees College.
She was a member of Mount
Carmel United Methodist
Church. In North Carolina, she
was an active member and
Mother of the Church at Church
of the Foundation. Lovely Mae
retired from the Department of
Human Services in New York.
She was an excellent gardener
and cook. She also enjoyed
reading, puzzles and making
people laugh.
Victoria Buskey Dingle
Horton, 75 of Branchville, died
Sunday, August 26, 2012, at her
residence. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 1,
2012, at St. Stephen Baptist Church, Branchville.
Mrs. Sandra Bozard
McWaters, 59, of Orangeburg,
died Saturday, August 25, 2012,
at the Regional Medical Center,
Orangeburg. A graveside service was
held Friday, August 31,
2012, at Crestlawn Memorial
Gardens, Orangeburg. She was a 1971 graduate of
Branchville High School, a
member of Revlon Baptist
Church and a lifelong resident of
Orangeburg. She was born in
Summerville, a daughter of the
late Donnie Bozard and Ora
Flake Bozard.
Services for Mr. Julius
“Carlye” Moody, 74, of
Bamberg, were held Thursday, August 30, 2012, at
St. John’s Baptist Church,
Bamberg. Mr. Julius “Carlye” Moody, the son of the late Leon and
Daisy Mae Moncrief Moody,
was born October 20, 1937, in
Govan. At an early age, he
joined Sweet Branch Baptist
Church. Carlye, as he was
known by both family and
friends, was educated in the
public schools of Olar. He was a
former employee of the
Interstate Truck Stop in Ulmer.
As a result of Carlye’s
entrepreneurial spirit, he owned
and operated several businesses:
Moody Trucking, the Little
Cafe, a charter bus service, a
logging company and many
other enterprises.
Funeral services for
Anthony G. ‘Boo-Boo’ Rice, 50,
of Columbia, formerly of
Bamberg, were held Friday, August 31, 2012, at
Refuge Temple Church, Columbia. He was born December 31,
1961, in Brooklyn, NY, to Leola
Rice. “Boo-Boo,” as he was
affectionately known, was raised
in Bamberg. He was a graduate
of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High
School, class of 1980. He
attended and graduated from
both Denmark Technical
College and Voorhees College, where he received his BA degree
in sociology. In 1992, he relocated to Columbia and was
employed by the South Carolina
Department of Disabilities and
Special Needs for more than 20
years. Anthony was a member of
Bethlehem Missionary Baptist
Church, Olar, and later attended
Refuge Temple Church, Columbia.
Lauretha Moody Sanders,
62, of Denmark, died Monday,
August 27, 2012, at Barnwell
County Hospital. Funeral service was held Saturday, September 1,
2012, at St. Matthews Church of
Deliverance, Denmark. Lauretha was born
November 6, 1949, in Bamberg
County to the late Hun and Lillie
Moody. She was educated in the
public schools of Denmark.
Mrs. Deloris Stroman, 61,
of Denmark, died Sunday,
September 2, 2012, at the
Regional Medical Center in
Orangeburg. Funeral arrangements will
be made available at a later date.
