Donna Blume Brown
plans to run as a 'Petition
Candidate' and will be on the
November 6, 2012 ballot for
Probate Judge of Bamberg
County.
Brown said she was
certified on March 30, 2012, by
the Bamberg County
Democratic Party as a
candidate for Bamberg County
Probate Judge and was
supposed to be on the ballot for
the June 12, 2012 Democratic
Primary.
On May 2, 2012, the South
Carolina Supreme Court ruled
and about 200 candidates
statewide were removed from
the June ballot. Brown said she
was removed from the from the
ballot by the Bamberg County
Democratic Party on May 4,
2012, for not being in
compliance with the Supreme
Court ruling.
"There is no doubt that I did
not specifically comply with the
Supreme Court Ruling that
mandates that an individual file
a Statement of Economic
Interest (SEC) at the same time
and with the same official that
an individual files a Statement
of Intention of Candidacy-
Partisan (SIC). I take full
responsibility for my failure to
do so."
However, Brown said that
she did everything exactly as
she was instructed to do
according to the Bamberg
County Democratic Party when
she filed. Apparently, according
to Brown, the Democratic Party
was unaware of the proper filing
procedures.
The Chairman of the
Bamberg County Democratic Party, Alzena Robinson, said
Tuesday, "The committee made
their decision to take Brown off
the ballot based on the Supreme
Court's decision that both forms
had to be filed at the same time.
Robinson said the Supreme
Court said you had to turn in a
hard copy of the form, but they
amended this, and said that the
summary sheet was all that was
needed.
According to Robinson, all
other candidates on the ballot
filed their forms at the same
time.
Robinson said the Bamberg
Democratic Party checked the
filing time of each candidate
before any decision was made.
Brown said her decision to
run for Probate Judge was made
because she considered the job
a position where she would be
able to help and assist people in
times of need.
"I stand by my decision to
run for this office and will be on
the November 6, 2012 ballot as
a petition candidate for Probate
Judge," said Brown. |
