Graveside funeral services
for Maggie Sandra Chavis, 58,
of Springfield, were held
Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in
Williston Cemetery. Maggie passed away on
Saturday, May 12, 2012.
Born in Aiken County, she
was a daughter of Cedie Chavis
and Mattie Lou Widener Chavis
and was married to the late
Harold Chavis. She was a
homemaker.
Collis H. “Tom” Davis, 79,
of Bamberg, died Monday, May 14, 2012, at
UPAC of Bamberg. Funeral plans will be
announced.
Surrounded by the love of
her family, Susan Hundley
Dickinson Hagan, beloved
mother, musician and teacher,
transcended peacefully in her
home on Monday, May 14,
2012, after a brief illness.
A visitation will be held
from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May
19, at Goldfinch Funeral Home,
Beach Chapel, in Murrells Inlet,
with graveside services to follow
at 3:30 p.m. at Belin United
Methodist Church Cemetery,
4182 Highway 17 Business,
Murrells Inlet.
For many years she taught
in the public schools of Lake
City, Coward, and at Socastee
High School in Myrtle Beach,
S.C. She was an active member
of First Presbyterian Church in
Lake City, where she sang in the
choir. In recent years, Susan was
administrative assistant with
Expert Care in Myrtle Beach
from 2001 to 2012.
Born in Orangeburg, on
August 20, 1936, Susan was the
daughter of the late Justine
Smith Hundley Culler and
Daniel Marchant Culler, both of
Orangeburg and the late Robert
Washington Hundley of
Leakesville, N.C. She was the
granddaughter of Forrest
Stanmore Smith of Saluda;
Justine Eva Sanders Smith, Julia
Belle Marchant Culler and
Julian Wesley Culler, all of
Orangeburg. She attended
Columbia College in Columbia
and studied voice at
Chautauqua, N.Y., and under
opera singer Elda Vittori of
Asheville, N.C.
The funeral for Ophelia V.
Lowery Utsey, of Orangeburg,
widow of the Rev. Dr. Jervy S.
Utsey, was held Monday, May
14, 2012, at the Lovely Hill
Baptist Church in Smoaks. Ophelia, the youngest child
to the union of the late James T.
and Lillies Taylor Lowery, was
born May 1, 1924, in Lee
County. She departed this life on
Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at the
residence. Ophelia was educated in
Lee and Florence counties
where she graduated form
Brockington High School,
Timmonsville. She then
attended Allen University,
Columbia and graduated form
Claflin University, Orangeburg,
receiving a B.S. in Education.
Serving as an educator for more
than 32 years in the Elementary
Public School System of
Colleton County, her love for
people and especially children
was demonstrated through years
of dedicated services. Ophelia
was an active member of Lovely
Hill Baptist Church where she
was recognized and appreciated
for her commitments, diligence
and years of service.
Mrs. Louise Reid Wright,
95, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly
of Bamberg County, died Friday,
May 4, 2012, in Brooklyn.
Graveside services were
held on Sunday, May 13, 2012
in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Bamberg. She
was the daughter of the late
Nathaniel and Luddie
Singleton Reid.
The funeral for Fannie
Elease Zimmerman, 81, of
Bowman, was held Friday,
May 11, 2012, at Pineville
United Methodist Church. Mrs. Zimmerman died
Saturday, May 5 2012, at the
Regional Medical Center in
Orangeburg following an
extended illness. She was born on June 24,
1930. Mrs. Zimmerman was
the fifth of nine siblings born
to the late Francis Marion
Jones and Alice Carson Jones.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Romie
Boyd Zimmerman.
