Storm damages MAMAS...no money for repairs
Jerry E. Halmon, Staff Reporter

The line of severe thunder
storms that struck Bamberg
County early Tuesday morning
knocking down numerous trees,
bringing down power lines
which resulted in several traffic
accidents. Bamberg County
Emergency Services personnel
received several calls about a
possible tornado touching down
in the county, but couldn’t verify
that one did. “Just a real bad
storm,” Quincy Wright an
official with the Bamberg
County Emergency Services
Office said Tuesday morning.
Joey Sutton and Amy Buist
Co-managers of the Mary Ann
Morris Animal Shelter
(MAMAS) are convinced that
something close to a tornado
struck their agency Tuesday
morning. Upon arriving to work
they found: tree limbs down, a
whole section of the fence and
gate surrounding the compound
off, a large section of the tin roof
over the dog pens blown off,
dogs out of their pens, the
ceiling in the office falling
down, pens open, wires exposed,
two dogs missing, one dog hurt
and another bunch of scared
animals.
Sutton and Buist thanked
the students from the Bamberg
Job Corps Center for helping
remove the tree limbs that fell in
the animal compound. “They
(Bamberg Job Corps Center
students) really helped, they
made us operational again, they
did an excellent job with the
clean up,” Sutton said. They also
thanked MAMAS board
member Joey Guess for helping
cut down limbs.
As for repairing the roof to
the office at MAMAS given the
present budget situation; the co-managers
noted: “We can’t afford to fix it, we’re making do
with what we have.”

According to the Sheriff
Burglary/Larceny/Trespassing
Mr. Justin Gillam, age 21 of
Olar, was arrested on one count
of Burglary 2nd and one count
of Larceny/Breaking into a
motor vehicle and one count of
Trespassing.
The charges on Mr. Gillam
stem from two different
incidents. A citizen of the county
came into the Sheriff’s Office to
check if a gun he had purchased
was stolen. Investigators
determined that it was one of
two guns taken from a residence
in Olar earlier. Further
investigation led to the name of
the person who brought the
second gun and a warrant was
issued for Mr. Gillam for
Burglary 2nd.
In a separate incident in
Olar a resident observed a male
inside of his wife’s car. When
confronted the male fled the
scene. Officers of the Sheriff’s
Office were unable to locate the
subject at that time but some
items were taken into evidence.
An aggressive investigation by
the Sheriff’s Office leads to the
arrest of Mr. Justin Gillam for
the one count of Larceny and
Trespassing in this case.
Criminal Sexual Conduct
A mother concerned about
revelations her young daughter
shared with her came to the
Sheriff’s Office with her
concerns. An investigation
began and resulted in the arrest
of Mr. Thomas Pierce, age 63, of
Bamberg. Mr. Pierce is charged
with Criminal Sexual Conduct
with a minor-victim under 11
years of age-first Degree. Chief
Magistrate Judge R. Craig
Threatt proceeded over the
initial appearance. Mr. Pierce
will remain in jail with no bond
until he appears before a circuit
court judge for a bond hearing.
