Bamberg students meet Governor Haley and Representative Sellers
Joyce M. Searson, Publisher

Richard Carroll third grade
students along with their
teachers took a recent field trip
to the SC State Museum and
then the State House. The kids
enjoyed a picnic lunch on the
State House grounds before
meeting with Governor Nikki
Haley.
The Governor, a Bamberg
native, spoke to the students and
answered questions. She
explained to them that she too
was a third grade student in
Bamberg and how much she
loved Bamberg.
Teacher Lisa Thomas said,
“She told me to "Kiss the
ground when I got back to
Bamberg for her. That's how
much she loves the City of
Bamberg. She took up so much
time with us.”
Bamberg teacher Renee’
Jeffcoat, a former classmate of
Governor Haley, was a
chaperone for the trip since her
son, Baylor Jeffcoat, was a 3rd
grade student.
House District 90
Representative Bakari Sellers
also met with the students and
talked with them about the
importance of doing well in
school so they too could have a
successful future and be
anything they wanted to be.
Both Governor Haley and
Representative Sellers then
graciously had photos taken
with the kids.
“I just wish we had more
time, because both Governor
Haley and Representative
Sellers wanted to give us a tour
of the State House.
This is a trip that I am sure
the kids will remember for the
rest of their lives,” said Thomas.

Citizens support Sello
Jerry Durgan, Contributing Writer
Parents, teachers and
residents during the Bamberg
School District Two Board
meeting March 14 voiced their
support for Superintendent Dr.
Jake Sello, who recently
resigned effective June 30
without publicly stating a
reason.
The Rev. James Jackson,
reading a letter of support,
presenting the trustees with
more than 130 signatures.
Five more pages of signatures
were coming, he explained to
the Board.
Trustee Loretta P.
Goodman then motioned that
the district look for an interim
superintendent as soon as
possible. Chairman Larry Bias
seconded the motion.
"We are not ready for
that," Trustee Blossom
Thompson said. "We are
getting ready to have an
election in less than a month,
and the board may change.
The new board should be in
place at the beginning of a
superintendent search. Let the
new board have the
opportunity to make that
decision at the beginning,"
with accompanying applause
from the citizens.
Goodman explained she
"did not want to put Dr. Sello
out tomorrow but to begin
looking for a replacement."
Her motion failed with only
Bias and her voting for it.
Carlisle Origins
Jerry Durgan, Contributing Writer
“I’m going to talk loud,”
Bamberg Mayor Alton
McCollum said March 17 at
the Bamberg Job Corps
Center’s Industrial Relations
Council meeting. “I don’t want
you to miss a thing!” he said
among applause and laughter.
Briefly talking about the
origins of the property now
known as the Bamberg Job
Corps Center, McCollum said
“I was surprised when I
learned that I was to do some
research on the grounds and
buildings” that were once the
now defunct Carlisle Military
School in Bamberg. “How
many of you know that this
used to be Wofford College?”
he asked the audience. Only a
few raised their hands. “His
name was James Carlisle
Wofford, the president of
Wofford College (in
Spartanburg) and somehow he
said ‘we’ve got to go down
there and do something.’ So
they came down here and put
an extension on Wofford
College and called it the
Wofford College Fitting
School.” Carlisle Fitting
School was largely a town of
Bamberg enterprise, authorized
by the South Carolina
Conference, in 1892, as a
preparatory school for Wofford
College.
In 1928, Col. James F.
Risher was elected Headmaster. But the
need for preparatory schools
had passed, and Carlisle in that
year ceased to be affiliated
with Wofford College.
Four years later South
Carolina Methodism leased,
and later sold, the plant to Col.
Risher to become the widely
known Carlisle Military
School. In 1932 Carlisle was
leased by Colonel and Mrs.
James F. Risher and in 1938
was purchased by them. They,
and later their son, Colonel
William Risher, operated it as
a military preparatory school
until it closed in May 1977.
In 1977 the U.S.
Department of Labor selected
South Carolina and Bamberg
as the site for the next new Job
Corps Center. “When they
came down to look at the site
they said ‘this would be a great
place for Job Corps,’”
McCollum told the audience of
several dozen. “There was not
a Job Corps Center around here
so they bought it in 1977. The
rest is history,” he said. “It’s a
wonderful place. We are so
glad that we were able to keep
something on these grounds
and these buildings, especially
since it is Job Corps. I want to
thank Eric Jones (the current
Center Director of the
Bamberg Job Corps Center).
He is one of the finest men I’ve
met,” he said.
