Main Street UMC hosts Appreciation Luncheon
Jerry E. Halmon, Staff Reporter

Main Street United Methodist
Church in Bamberg hosted an
appreciation luncheon Thursday
for some “special people” in our
community. The Church members
served a delicious meal to
members of the Bamberg County
Sheriff’s Office, Bamberg Police
Department, Bamberg Board of
Public Works, Bamberg Fire
Department and Bamberg County
Rescue Squad in the Church’s
fellowship hall.
“Many of us take our City
and County employees for
granted,” Virgie Corbin said in
stating the reason for the
luncheon. “These people are very
hardworking people and many
times go to the limit to accomplish
what needs to be done. It was our
pleasure to honor them. We are
looking forward to doing this
again.”
Bamberg Connections
The two members of the 3-A Chapin High School wrestling
team who were gold medal
winners in the 3-A individual
finals have Bamberg
connections.
Stuart Hope, who won his
third consecutive state
championship at 119 pounds,
(he won previously at 112 and
103 pounds) is the grandson of
the late Bamberg native Eddie
Rice and is the great-nephew of
Mary Ravenel of Bamberg.
Scott Swindell, who won
the gold at 152 pounds, is a
junior at Chapin High School.
His father, Michael, graduated
from B-E High School in 1981
and his grandparents, Charlie
and Becky Swindell, live at
PawPaw Villas in Bamberg.
The B-E wrestling team,
with its state championship, has
brought a great deal of pride to
the town and school and it’s
interesting to see that the success
has extended beyond the city
and county limits.
Consolidate Financial Offices
State Comptroller Richard
Eckstrom says consolidating
the state's two financial offices
– Comptroller’s Office and
Treasurer’s Office -- would
likely result in greater
efficiency and accountability.
"There is no compelling
reason not to consolidate at
some point in the future the
functions of the state’s two
financial offices -- the
Comptroller and the Treasurer -
- into a single department
reporting to the Governor," said
Eckstrom, who served as state
Treasurer from 1995 to 1999.
"If this is done prudently, it
would streamline and improve
the financial management of
state government, and it would
save money for taxpayers in the
process primarily by reducing
the combined cost of
administering each office
separately.
“Having served as both
Treasurer and Comptroller, I
am positive this change would
not only work but also result in
significant cost-savings which
would benefit the state. And
now, more than ever, we must
be working to find ways to
reduce unnecessary costs while
sparing core functions of
government,” he said. “Tough
times such as these call for
tough choices.”
