Accident sends local man to hospital

A well known elderly
Bamberg man was taken to the
hospital Monday morning after
suffering injuries after the
bicycle he was riding collided
with a tractor trailer truck in the
City of Bamberg. According to
a City of Bamberg Police
Incident Report, on February
21, at 8:46 a.m. a unit of the
Bamberg Police Department
was dispatched to the
intersection of Walnut and US-
301 in reference to a vehicle
versus bicycle accident.
When Officers arrived on
the scene they found Mr.
Frankie Counts, 75 of 381
Bridge Street in Bamberg on
the roadway with a laceration
on the top of his head.
According to the incident report
witnesses near the scene of the
accident stated that Mr. Counts
was traveling towards Walnut
Street from the old Piggly
Wiggly parking lot and failed to
yield to the tractor-trailer driven by Morris Felder, 35, of
Orangeburg.
According to the incident
report Mr. Felder, the driver of
the truck had no injuries and
was not cited. Mr. Counts was
transported by the Bamberg
Rescue Squad to the Bamberg
County Hospital where he was
treated and released.
Denmark Fire Department responds to Voorhees College fire

Units of the Denmark Fire
Department responded to a
structure fire at the Voorhees
College Apartments on Voorhees
Road Monday afternoon
February 21. According to
Denmark Fire Department
personnel, when Denmark
firefighters arrived on the scene
one of the apartments in the
complex was fully involved. The
fire is believed to have started in
the kitchen area of the apartment
and was pretty much contained
by the efforts of the firefighters
to the first floor which sustained
heavy smoke damage.
Responding to the scene of the
fire were units of the Denmark
Fire Department, Denmark
Police Department and Voorhees
College Campus Security
Officers.
Federal Flood Insurance
The Town of Ehrhardt has
joined over 21,000 communities
nationwide that are allowed to
purchase federally backed flood
insurance. This availability
follows the community’s
adoption and enforcement of
ordinances to reduce flood
losses and acceptance by the
National Flood Insurance
Program (NFIP).
The Town of Ehrhardt is
now a participant in the NFIP
effective on January 7, 2011.
Residents of the Town of
Ehrhardt will be able to purchase
flood insurance up to the limits
under the Regular Phase of the
program. However, there is a 30-day waiting period before flood
insurance coverage goes into effect.

Award that is named in honor of
the foundation’s largest
benefactor. “The award was
established to recognize an
individual who has been an
inspiration in Bamberg County
and shown outstanding
leadership to the community.
This award recognizes an
individual who exemplifies the
values of the SEKOTS
Foundation: teaching, learning,
empowerment, innovation,
diversity, and community,” said
Lisa B. Stokes, the
organization’s founder.
