Bamberg Women’s Center...Obstetrics and Gynecology opens

Jerry E. Halmon, Staff Reporter

Under a clear blue, sunny sky on Tuesday morning October 19th, the long awaited Grand Opening of the Bamberg Women’s Center- Obstetrics and Gynecology was held at the Bamberg County Memorial Hospital. “There have been a lot of people who have contributed to this and we’re just excited we’re getting started,” Carl Menist, Administrator and CFO, BCH, told a nice crowd of county officials, hospital board members, foundation members and hospital staff who came out to witness the opening of the clinic.

“We’re very excited to assist in the celebration and establishment of this specialty Women’s Center, with the cooperation and leadership of Dr. Gasnel Bryan and Dr. Margo Muniz” said Lou-Ann Carter Chair, Board of Trustees of BCH. Carter said both Dr. Muniz and Dr. Gasnel Bryan maintained their principal practices in Aiken, SC. with Dr. Bryan also operating a practice in Barnwell. “Both doctors have a passion for rural health care and are excited about expanding into the Bamberg County area,” Carter added.

“It’s good to be here today,” said Dr. Gasnel Bryan. “I’m hoping that my presents here will be of some benefits to the community as well as to the patients we will be serving.” “We’re very excited to be here in Bamberg,” said Dr. Margo Muniz. “We’re looking forward to delivering lots of babies. We’re looking for to the 'Boutique Concept' we’ve been working on. I think the labor and delivery suite should be up quicker than people think. It’s going to be a very nice clinic in the low country for everyone to enjoy,” Dr. Muniz commented.

Initially the clinic will be open two days per week on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Diagnostic testing including laboratory and radiology work will be provided through the hospital and will be coordinated with the Women’s Clinic. Outpatient procedures will be performed in the hospital operating room.

While not licensed to do actual deliveries at this time Menist said the hospital and clinic are “working aggressively” with DHEC to get to that point “sooner than later,” he said.

The hospital administrator thanked all of those involved in getting the Women’s Center up and running including: Dr. Muniz and Dr. Bryan; Kathy Schwarting, Teresa Valentine, Teresa Johnson, Denise Parler, the maintenance staff of the hospital, Fairview Farm and Nursery of Cope, S.C. and New Turf of Norway, S.C. for providing the landscaping.

Model T’s to Olar

Jerry Durgan, Contributing Writer

“We didn’t even have as many Model Ts as we’ve had in the past,” says Olar Mayor Walter O’Rear. “We’ve had a good turnout of festival goers this year,” He said, “and the vendors are here as usual offering a lot of wares, but the economy this year has certainly put a blanket on our exhibits and contestants.” Even so, from the Model T parade to the Sleytown Strummers, the Southern Star Cloggers, the Haunted Hay Ride and Haunted Trail, vendors with festival food, drink, fabric and hard goods, there was plenty of really interesting things to see, do, and hear.

The Over the Hill Gang, all of the musicians Earl, Steve, C.O. and Billy are over 60 years old (except for singer) played some really foot-stompin’ tunes.

Probably the most popular photo op for visitors to Olar’s Model T was the model T cutout made 30 years ago by Gary (Oliver) Russeth of Harlem, Ga. with a fiberglass depiction of Laurel and Hardy in the front seat and visitors could place themselves in the rear seats, a fine addition to Olar’s festival.

"I think this year’s festival was great! Everyone who came out had a great time and I am very happy with this year’s festival," said Brenna Hancock.
