Dennis (Pops) Bowers was
remembered as “a super star, a
hero and legend” of Gospel
Music by the large crowd of
friends, family members and
gospel music lovers who turned
out to a “home-going
celebration” of his life on
Saturday, August 14 at the
Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School
Gymnasium.
Bowers’ outstanding
musical career began with the
Sensational Four at the age of 13,
which later led him to join the
“Superstar” of gospel, Tommy
Ellison, at the age of 19 were
embarked on a career that
spanned 30-years with the world
famous group. After the passing
of the “Superstar” Ellison,
Bowers then became the lead singer of The Legendary Singing
Stars.
He was remembered as a
musician who when he hit the
stage the fans could expect
excitement. “When you do
something for the people, you do
it from the heart,” it was said of
how Bowers performed.
Dennis Bowers was a
“superstar” in gospel music who
reared a “superstar” son in
football in former Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School standout
and present Clemson star
Daquan Bowers. It was noted
that “as a football player and
guitarist Daquan was Dennis’
hero.”
In a moving testimony to
his father, Daquan said: “For 17-years all I wanted to do was play
lead guitar in this band. For 17-years my father told me, son,
you’re not ready yet, so I
practiced and practiced,”
Daquan said. On Saturday
Daquan turned in a virtuoso solo
performance on his guitar in
honor of his father.
As much as Dennis Bowers
was remembered for the many
songs he wrote, he was also
remembered for the kind of man
he was. “When he gave you his
word, it came attached to his
heart,” his niece Paula Copeland
said. Adding “he always made a
way,” if it was getting football
tickets for 48-family members
when the family only had 24
tickets.
In reassuring all of those in
attendance at the home-going
celebration that Dennis Bowers
was ok now, the large crowd was
reminded of the song he wrote
“At the gate I know”. “Dennis is
at the gate. He’s up there with all
the other members of the
Ellison-Miles family.” |
