Jerry E. Halmon, Staff Reporter

The Bamberg Job Corps Center held its monthly Community Relations/Community Industry Council Luncheon on May 27, on the center’s campus. Approximately 50 representatives from the business and governmental community in Bamberg County attended the luncheon along with faculty and staff members from the center.

The welcome was given by Evelyn Stanley, Bamberg Job Corps Center Business Community Liaison. Dr. Wanda Nettles, Career Technical Training Manager at BJCC provided words of thanks and welcome. “At Bamberg Job Corps Center, we value our strong relationships with our local communities and we appreciate all your contributions to our students,” Stanley said.

Craig Brown, CEO of the Marietta, GA. based PowerConnects was the guest speaker at the luncheon. Brown stated in giving a brief overview of his company, that the company is a pre-employment program, which provides custom-made training and certified trained workers for employers at no cost to the employer for training. “The employee is ready to work from day-one,” Brown said.

Brown noted that the six-to-eight week training program his company provides employers is technology driven with voice, videos, interactive and his self paced. He noted that an advantage of the program to employers is that they can save money on training and receive a tax credit for adding additional employees.

The PowerConnects Company started in 2006 and has trained over 2,000 people so far. The company also trains clients in the “soft skills” required to be successful in today’s workplace. “Soft skills are a definite part of our training, very important,” Brown added. A few of the soft skills clients learn are; the importance of coming to work on time, taking pride in their work and dressing properly.

According to Brown, some of the nationally recognized companies to use his services are: The New York Times, Home Depot, AT&T and Revlon. Other companies noted that have used the company’s services are the Jordan Insurance Company, Jackson Insurance Company of Ridgeland and Job Corps Centers was noted as a prospective client. Members of the Bamberg Fire Department braved high temperatures this past Saturday morning for another good cause. The department held their annual Muscular Dystrophy Association “Fill-The-Boot” Help Jerry’s Kids’ fundraiser at the intersection of Highways 301 and 78 in Bamberg. Because of the extreme heat at noon time, the department was unable to continue the activity in the afternoon. The firefighters however raised a total of $425 in the limited time they had and they hope to have another fundraiser the weekend of July 4th.
