Four Bamberg men charged Print E-mail

An on-going dispute over a female is believed to be the cause of a shooting incident Tuesday evening in the city of Denmark that left one man with a gunshot wound to the arm and four Bamberg men facing charges.

According to a Bamberg County Sheriff’s Office Incident Report, on Tuesday evening March 9, at approximately 4:08 p.m. officers were monitoring radio traffic when they were made aware of a shooting that took place in the City of Denmark.

According to Bamberg County Sheriff’s Office officials the victim, Demetrius Jones 32 of 93 Rice Ave in Denmark, in the March 9 shooting incident on Church Street in Denmark, was an innocent bystander, who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The victim was treated in the Palmetto Richland Hospital and released.

The incident happened after a group of men from Denmark allegedly got into a dispute over a female with another group of men from Bamberg. The Bamberg group returned to Denmark with a gun according to Sheriff Darnell.

According to the incident report: Shamalle James, 18, of 471 Calhoun Street, Bamberg, was later identified as the shooter; Rodney Selby Lewis, 21 of 58 Henry Street, Bamberg; Querockis Daywan Verner, 20, of 1390 Capernum Road, Bamberg and Steven Eric Bostic, 20 of 102 Middle Street, Bamberg were each charged with one count each of assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

In a bond hearing on Thursday evening, bond was set on James at $25,000 security; while Lewis, Verner, and Bostic were placed under $15,000 security bonds each. As of Friday evening, James and Bostic had made bond while Lewis and Verner remained in the custody of the Bamberg County Detention Center.

Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell stated that the incident is not believed to be gang related. Darnell said in charging the four Bamberg men with assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, in South Carolina the law says, “the hand of one is the hand of all.” Sheriff Darnell stated that the case is still under investigation.
