Clayton Resigns after 35 years

Ann Clayton resigned her position as Bamberg County Treasurer after 35 years and Alice Johnson was sworn in as the new treasurer on Thursday, May 1.

Johnson, a Denmark native, was appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to fill Clayton’s unexpired term.

County receives $45,000 grant

To upgrade boat landings along the Edisto River in Bamberg County, State Senator Brad Hutto and State Representative Bakari Sellers presented a check for $45,000 to County Administrator Rose Dobson-Elliott at Bobcat Landing on the Edisto River.

Hutto explained that the grant is to “upgrade and redo landings along the Edisto River to make sure all of the ramps are suitable for fishermen, canoes, and those who want to use these important recreational areas.

Bamberg Textile Mill ‘Old Memories’

Bamberg native and local artist, Billy Thomas, knows first hand what it was like to grow up in the mill village with both his parents and grandparents working at the Bamberg Textile Mill in Bamberg. His wife, Brenda worked in the office of the mill from 1980 to 1982 in the purchasing department with Mac Clinkscales.

Bank robbery in Denmark

A bank robbery that occurred Tuesday, April 29 at Enterprise Bank in Denmark is still under investigation. Police said a black male entered the bank at approximately 4:52 p.m. Witnesses said the robber handed the teller a piece of paper demanding cash then ran out of the bank. Pieces of the suspects clothing were found near the crime scene.

Community needs to show support

It seems like it was just yesterday that families and friends were sharing cheers and tears combined with pride and sadness as our National Guard soldiers loaded buses for Camp Shelby, Mississippi where soldiers trained to train the Afghan Army and Police.

We are absolutely thrilled that our Soldiers are coming home! Please help us spread the word to the Bamberg County and surrounding community that we need to show our support for our returning soldiers.

Blume wins award

Deputy Adrienne Blume of Bamberg won 2nd place in the D.A.R.E. Car Show Competition, Patrol Division, on March 26 at Wal-Mart in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Customers at the store voted on the vehicles.

Govan FD wins

Members of the Govan Fire Department competed in the Lower State Firefighters Association’s, Firefighter Competition hosted by the Barnwell Fire Department.

Govan fire chief Mike Epperson said last week that the Govan Fire Department took 2nd place in the Overall Combined competition, 3rd Place in the Team Combat Challenge, and 1st place in the Team Bucket Brigade.

Firemen collect ‘Cans for Kids’

A working partnership between the Bamberg County Fire Departments and El Bab Shriners of Bamberg, Barnwell and Allendale, has donated over $1,300 To the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a one-of-a-kind health care system providing pediatric specialty care to thousands of kids each year...at no charge to their families...thanks to the generosity of donors, past and present.

En-DEERing guest

Tom and Daisy Davis of Bamberg had a very unusual visitor Sunday evening when a young deer showed up in their backyard. The deer seemed almost tame when he came up to them on their patio and even allowed them and their Sunday guest to pet him. He just fit right in with the Davis’ and their dogs were not even barking at him. They were not sure what to do about him, not knowing if he might even be someone’s pet. Tom said a few days ago he had noticed a young deer in the edge of his yard and he said that this looked like the same deer.

Clyburn to address 2008 Voorhees graduates

Voorhees College will hold its 111th Commencement Convocation Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. in the Leonard E. Dawson Health and Human Resources Center. The keynote speaker for the event is U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn.

Malik Yoba speaks to DTC 2008 graduates

“Regardless of where you go in life, regardless of what it is you may have accomplished at Denmark Technical College, regardless of where you go from here, the most important thing that you can do is be accountable for your actions,” actor, author, and educator Malik Yoba told the 258 graduates and a standing room only audience at the 2008 Denmark Technical College annual Commencement Convocation on Saturday morning May 3, 2008 in the William L. McDuffie Student Services Center on the campus of Denmark Technical College.

Bamberg County Democrats Stage Candidates

The Bamberg County Democratic Party agreed to host a “Meet and Greet the Candidates” event set for May 20th at the Cherry Blossom Room at Voorhees College.

“Almost every elected position in Bamberg County is filled with a Democrat,” said Clair P. Guess, party chairman. “The party is committed to backing candidates who are interested in the success of Bamberg County.”

B-E Sophomore lineman drawing attention

Penn State is often referred to as Linebacker U. The Nittany Lions are well known for the number of outstanding linebackers that have come out of the program over the years.

Bamberg, South Carolina may so come to be known as Division I (D-I) Lineman High School. To the list of D-I defensive lineman produced by the Class 1-A football program the last four years get ready to add another name, A. J. Cann. Cann, a (6-3, 260) offensive and defensive lineman for the Red Raiders is listed on Rivals.Com and Scout.Com websites as a 10th grader to watch. On Saturday April 19 Cann along with several other B-E athletes attended the National Underclassmen Combine in Charlotte North Carolina. “Cann put up some great numbers,” according B-E Strength and Conditioning coach Corey Crosby, who himself as been nominated for State Strength and Conditioning Coach of The Year.

B-E’s Kody Breland named All-Star team

Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School Senior Varsity baseball player Kody Breland was recently selected to play in the 2008 North/South All-Star Baseball game. Breland has been a major force behind Coach David Horton’s young team’s drive toward another state championship playoff run.

D-O’s Kenneth Jennings turning heads

The Denmark-Olar athletic program is known more for turning out college basketball prospects than Division I football recruits. That could all change with the class of 2009 according to Jim Baxter, SC Varsity.com Publisher.

Wide receiver Kenneth Jennings attended the SC Varsity.com Elite QB-WR Camp in Darlington this past weekend and turned some heads with his prowess at camp.

Voorhees’ Antonio Bolton to play in Collegiate Invitational

Voorhees College basketball standout Antonio Bolton can add another honor to his growing resume. The junior (2007) NAIA All-American Honorable Mention from Augusta Ga. was recently selected by McCarthy Sports to compete in the Collegiate Invitational.

Bolton, who led the Royal Tigers to a second place finish in the NAIA Division I Championships last year is listed as one of the top 65 senior men’s basketball players in the National Collegiate Athletic Association( NCAA) Division II and Division III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) according to a press release from McCarthy Sports.

Kling hits hole in one

Avid golfer Harvey Kling of Bamberg had a hole in one at Paw Paw Country Club on April 23.

This was Kling's fourth hole in one, one other on #12 at Paw Paw, and two in the Chicago area at Naperville Country Club.
